

WOLCOTT- Ernest E. "Gene" Sherman, 92, beloved husband of the late Bea (Bradshaw) Sherman, died on Monday at the VITAS unit at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born in Waterbury on July 13, 1924, he was the son of the late Edward and Lena (Cabana) Sherman. Gene was inducted into the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17 as a M1 Rifle Sharpshooter in the Asiatic Pacific Area from March 1943 to December 1945 and participated in action against the enemy at Roe-Namur from February 2-8 1944.
He retired from Scovill Manufacturing and Century Brass in Waterbury. He resided in Wolcott since 1954 and was a parishioner of St. Maria Goretti Church. For 48 years he was a friend of Bill W.
Gene was passionate about the gym and he knew about healthy eating decades before everyone else caught on. He was an avid gardener and his yard was the envy of the neighborhood. People often stopped to take pictures, or ask fro a flower. His specialty was his prize winning dahlias. He even bred his own which he named after his daughters. He loved the beach and always had a tan. At one point he even made a tanning box, so he could get started even if the weather was still chilly.
Gene is survived by his six children, Gene Sherman and his husband Michael Salvio of Waterbury, Jan and her husband Bob Coppola of Melrose, FL, Eileen and her husband Dennis Dean, Bob and his wife Cathe Sherman all of Wolcott, Robin and her husband Dave Orlomoski of Barkhamsted, and Jim Sherman of Wolcott, ten grandchildren, Aaron Coppola, Stacie Coppola, Kiley Delgado, Keith Sherman, Jennifer Sherman, Dan Cyr, Kyle Sherman, Zack Cyr, Dillon Sherman, Jacob Sherman and seven great grandchildren, Ryan Coppola, Jordan Coppola, Greyson Coppola, Aubree Sherman, Braeden Delgado, Lena Elias, Madison Delgado. He was predeceased by five brothers.
Funeral will be Saturday 9:15 AM from DellaVecchia Funeral Home 690 Woodtick Rd. in Wolcott to St. Maria Goretti Church rch for a Mass at 10 AM. Burial with military honors will follow in Edgewood Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 5 to 8 PM.
