Hope B. Sherry, 93, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025, at Charter Senior Living in Brookfield, CT. Born on September 16, 1931, in Jersey City, NJ, she was the beloved daughter of the late George Burt and Mary (Connors) Burt.
Hope was the devoted wife of the late John L. “Jack” Sherry Jr., who predeceased her in 2021. High school sweethearts, Hope and Jack first met at St. Luke’s High School in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ. Their love story spanned 68 years of marriage, during which they built a joyful life centered on family, faith, travel, and service to others. They raised their family in Ridgefield, CT, but also lived abroad in Hong Kong for many years, and spent retirement in Savannah, GA and Williamsburg, VA.
A lifelong lover of nature, Hope found great joy in her garden and was a proud and active member of Ridgefield’s Caudatowa Garden Club. She had a gift for creating beauty - whether through her hands as a talented knitter and seamstress, crafting treasured Christmas stockings and afghans, or through her warm presence as a longtime volunteer at Norwalk Hospital, where she offered kindness and comfort by arranging flowers at the gift shop.
Hope cherished her many friendships, often gathered around a bridge table, where laughter and connection flourished. Her thoughtful, quiet strength and playful spirit created lasting memories for everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her six loving children: John L. “Jay” Sherry III and his wife Maureen Hanlon, Christopher D. Sherry and his wife Janet, Timothy P. Sherry and his wife Catherine, Elise S. Sowa and her husband David, Susan H. Coapman and her husband Scott, and Gregory J. Sherry and his wife Stephany.
Hope’s legacy continues through her 19 adored grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren (with one more on the way). She and Jack shared their love of history and learning by planning educational trips with each grandchild during their tween years. They also orchestrated countless family reunions, where ‘Sherry Olympics’ became beloved traditions - celebrations filled with games, laughter, and enduring family bonds.
She is also survived by her sisters-in-laws: Jeanne Pattman, Judy Bartlett and her husband Walter, and Janice Sherry. Hope was predeceased by her dear brother, David Burt.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Church of St. Dominic, 1050 Flanders Road, Southington, CT. Guests are kindly asked to gather directly at the church. Interment will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery in Southington. There will be no public calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Hope’s name may be made to Regional Hospice of CT, 30 Milestone Road, Danbury, CT 06810, or online at www.regionalhospicect.org.
