Igino Torone passed away Tuesday February 11, 2025 at the age of 92. Born in Castel Campagnano Italy on July 25, 1932 to Raffaele Torone and Giovannina La Porta. Igino is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years Rosa Orfiltelli (Telese Italy), four Children: Ralph (Leslie), Eugene (Nell), Alexander (Sharon), and Vivian Zipoli, eight grandchildren: Jessica, Meghan, Igino Jr, Jonathon, Justin, Jamie, Caleb, and Vincent, five great grandchildren: Charlotte, Nora, Josie, Luca, & Sophia, and countless nieces, nephews, and cousins residing in Italy.
Igino grew up during World War II, learning valuable lessons in charity and service. At 17, he left Italy and moved to Southington, CT, where he learned English and completed his education. In 1951, at the age of 20, Igino enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving with distinction for 26 years during the Vietnam, Korean, and Cold War eras. His career in communications (early computers) took him to three continents, four countries, and six U.S. states. Fluent in English, Italian, and French, he was a natural fit to command a NATO unit in Naples, Italy, for five years during the cold-war. In 1977, he retired at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant (NCO) and returned to Southington, CT, to continue his career in computers at General Electric. He retired a second time in 1994 at the age of 62, after 17 years with GE.
During his time in Southington, Igino remained dedicated to community service. He assisted veterans at the American Legion, where he rose to the position of Commander of Post 72. For 25 years, he served as the Financial Secretary at the Southington Sons of Italy, leading the Scholarship Committee for high school students and earning the prestigious Brotherhood Award, which celebrates the best of community and Italian heritage. Igino was also active in the Town of Southington Democratic Party and frequently volunteered for various other community services.
Above all, Igino was a devoted father, uncle, Nonno, and friend who remained faithful to the Catholic Church. He selflessly sacrificed and provided for his family, ensuring they never lacked anything. With a warm smile, he was a constant presence at his grandchildren's school events, weddings, graduations, and never forgot a birthday.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2025 at 10:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Dominic Church, 1050 Flanders Rd. for a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery.
