Born in Waterbury on January 6th 1943, he was the son of the late Thomas and Rose (Mulkern) Costello. He lived in Wolcott all of his life and was commonly known as "The Governor."
He worked proudly as a Teamster driving trucks and moving mountains with O&G Construction, Tilcon and Charter Oak but his most profound contribution to the community was the fellowship of the people whose lives he touched in AA. He was a firm believer that AA could help everyone, including juvenile delinquents in jail and pioneered programs for them. As an AA activist, he didn't talk much, but when he did, he had much to share. He was a fixture in Alcoholics Anonymous for three decades, a man who believed deeply in the principles of the 12-step program and always opened his door to those who sought his help and believed in the power to change.
He had an abundance of friends, was very proud of his family and loved spending time at his beach house in Niantic, Connecticut. He was known for his Irish wit, his red hair and his twinkling blue eyes. He loved motorcycles and vintage cars and was the proud owner of a 1958 Studebaker Golden Hawk. In the 1960s he was a member of the Connecticut Rods and more recently the Bristol Car Club. He also had a passion for ice cream.
Besides his wife, survivors include three sons, Gregory J. Costello of York, Pennsylvania; James A. Costello of Carlsbad, California and Colman T. Costello of Los Angeles, California; and a daughter Chay Costello Sosin of New York City and four grandchildren, Dominic, Anthony, Maya and Isabella Costello. He also leaves behind two brothers, Thomas F. Costello of Southington and Patrick Costello of Thomaston and a sister, Mary Jane Hennessey of Naugatuck and numerous nieces and nephews. His siblings who have gone before him are Barbara Grant, John Costello and RoseAnn Barratt.
The family will have a memorial celebration of his life on Saturday, November 25th 12.00 to 3.00 p.m. at St. Maria Goretti Church Hall 1300 Woodtick Road Wolcott, CT. All family and friends are welcome to come to share their favorite memories and celebrate his life. There are no calling hours. The family requests that you support any local AA group in his memory. The DellaVecchia Funeral Home 690 Woodtick Rd. Wolcott is assisting the family with the arrangements. Visit his obituary at www.dellavecchiafh.com .
