WATERBURY- Jean Lorraine (Egert) Schmollinger, 89, passed peacefully at Atria Senior Living on February 14, 2020 with her daughter Lisa by her side. She was the widow of Arnold K. Schmollinger Sr.; they were married for 36 happy years until finally reuniting in Heaven on Valentine's Day.
Jean was the youngest of four daughters born to August and Mary (Noss) Egert on June 25, 1930 in Waterbury. She loved being a city girl, attended Hopeville Grammar School, and graduated from Wilby High School in 1948. She proceeded to graduate from Perry School of Business and worked at Colonial Bank & Trust in downtown Waterbury. She became a branch manager for Sarah Coventry Jewelry where she was a successful businesswoman for many years.
Jean was baptized, confirmed, and married in St. John's Lutheran Church and was an active member. She later joined Cross of Christ Lutheran Church (Zion Lutheran) to be with her family for services.
She was generous, feisty, sweet, compassionate, had a flair for design and small details. She enjoyed furniture refinishing, antiques, tag sales, Florida gulf coast beaches, loved animals, and was a talented country line dancer. Anyone who knew Jean knew that she LOVED her chocolate. She loved going out to eat but also enjoyed time in her kitchen making her signature dishes; homemade mac and cheese, pork roast with oven roasted potatoes, meatballs with brown gravy (her grandson Nick's favorite), and her lemon meringue pie was pure perfection.
Not only did Jean enjoy traveling, but was a fun travel companion. Whether it was going to Florida to see her daughter Barb or Colorado to see her son Arnie, she was always game for an adventure. In recent years, Sunday was her day to spend time with her daughter Lisa, son-in-law Jim, and her grandsons.
Jean leaves behind, to cherish her memory, her three children, Barbara Jean Schmollinger of Tampa, FL, Arnold K. Schmollinger of Louisville, CO, and Lisa M. Rapisarda along with her husband James of Wolcott. She also leaves behind her three grandsons Nicholas, Michael, and Joshua Rapisarda whom she treasured. She genuinely enjoyed her babysitting time with them. She had always told them that their grandfather Arnold died much too soon, so she had to love them twice as much: once for her and once for their grandfather.
Besides her husband, Jean is predeceased by her three sisters Anna Ruegg, Olga Kushmider, and her dearest sister Adeline Larson.
The family would like to thank the staff of Atria Senior Living in Farmington, especially the life guidance and nursing staff who cared for Jean with the fondest affection and utmost respect. Their extended compassion and support for Lisa during Jean's final days was truly a gift.
Calling hours are Friday February 28th from 9-11am at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, 1555 Hamilton Ave. Waterbury. Funeral service to follow at 11am. Della Vecchia Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions in Jean's name may be made to Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, The Wounded Warrior Project, or St. Jude's Children's Hospital
