

He was the husband of the late Helena (Doherty) Burke.
Born May 22, 1913 in Waterbury, CT, the eldest son of the late Edward and Maude (Steele) Burke. Prior to his retirement following a 20 year career from the Polaroid Corp in Cambridge, MA. John was employed by the Boston Navy Yard during WWII and had completed his apprenticeship at the Lux Time Co. in Waterbury, CT.
He resided in Boston with his family for 40 years and relocated to Greenville, SC for 18 years where he was a parishioner of the Prince of Peace Church and a member of the Furman University Golf Course. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree.
John is survived by a son, John A. Burke Jr. of Lowell, MA; two granddaughters, Colleen Warnock and Shannon Ford and husband Vinnie all of Chelmsford, MA and three great granddaughters, Emily and Bridget Hayes and Amanda Warnock; he maintained a very close family relationship with his nieces and nephews especially, James and Selina McArdle of Cheshire, CT and William and Nancy Leonard of Madison, CT. He was predeceased by a granddaughter Christine Hayes, two sisters, Lillian Tucker and Dorothy McArdle; three brothers, Edward, Weston and William Burke and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Burke.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at St. Thomas Church, 99 Bristol St., Southington, CT at 10:30 a.m. Calling hours will be Thursday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington, CT. A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 1st at 11 a.m. at the Holyhood Cemetery, 587 Heath St., Brookline, MA.
