Born June 29, 1933; died at St. Catharines General Hospital on June 17, 2022. Alan was born and raised on a family farm in the small community of Silver Creek, British Columbia – just outside of Salmon Arm. He lived in a two-story log house that his father built, which had no electricity or indoor plumbing, and attended a one-room schoolhouse. He was the first person from his community to go to university – graduating from UBC as a mechanical engineer in 1955. Following graduation, Alan worked at the National Research Council in Ottawa. In 1962, he obtained his Master’s in City Planning from MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As a City Planner, he first worked as a consultant in Toronto before moving to St. Catharines in 1971, where he served as the Director of Planning for the Regional Municipality of Niagara until retiring in 1998. Alan was proud to be part of the development of the first official plan for the Region.
Alan was active in the community as a member of Probus North, Torch International, Scottish Country Dancing, Friends of Morningstar Mill and St. George’s Anglican Church. He will be warmly remembered for his thoughtful conversations.
He leaves behind his wife Janet; daughters Alison (Gerald) of Vancouver, Jennifer (Luc) of Ottawa and Lesley (Cory) of Guelph; granddaughters Erin (Tristan), Gwyn, Joelle and Amelie; siblings Brian (deceased) (Millie), Ken, Mary (Tom) and Dave (Mary); and numerous nephews and nieces. He was much loved and will be missed by all.
