

Passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, December 17th, 2015 in her 87th year with her husband at her side. Doreen leaves behind her loving husband, Ken, of 63 years. She was a loving mother to Richard (Michelle), Ronald and Marilyn Atherton (Mike Courchesne). Proud Grandmother of Julie Gorman (Dave), Cherilyn Bevacqua (Giulio) and Michael Flight. Great-grandmother to Lukas, Marissa and Evelyn. Doreen is survived by her nephews William Chapman (Carole), Tom Jones (Linda) and nieces Judi Schan (Gary), Kathy Sevigny (Pete) and Carol Linden (Ernie). Great-aunt to many nieces and nephews and their families.
Predeceased by her brothers Jesse (Audrey), Albert (Doris) and Ken, and her sisters Eva, Vera (Bill) and Ada (Milton). Doreen was born and raised in St. Catharines, where she worked at City Hall for several years before raising a family with Ken. Doreen and Ken co-owned Merrittville Speedway for many years before becoming involved in the Standardbred horse business on their farm in Pelham. Doreen and Ken retired to Fonthill seven years ago where they continued to enjoy gardening, golfing and their family.
The family extends their sincerest gratitude to the caring and compassionate nurses, Kim and Laurie, from Saint Elizabeth Health Care of St. Catharines, who took care of Doreen during her illness. Doreen’s family will receive friends at the HULSE & ENGLISH FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 75 Church St., St. Catharines, Ontario (905-684-6346) on Saturday, December 19th from 11am. A Celebration of Doreen’s life will be in the Chapel at 1p.m. Cremation. A private interment will take place at Victoria Lawn Cemetery.
