Elsie was born in St. Catharines, Ontario on July 27, 1932 to parents Walter and Ethel Gosney. She is predeceased by her infant sister, parents and husband William “Bill” McGarvey. She came to know and love Jesus as her personal Saviour as a young girl and lived a life that demonstrated love and service for others. Elsie grew up on Hamilton street and attended Edith Cavell Public School and St. Catharines Collegiate. She married Bill, her childhood sweetheart, on October 25, 1952 and worked at Niagara Glass until they started their family. Bill and Elsie had 4 children; Brian (Lois) McGarvey, Brenda (Bill) Kurz, Karen (Terry) Gregory and Lynda (Duane) Girdner, and thirteen grandchildren; Alanna (Darrell) Sleep, Em McGarvey, Elissa (Jordyn) Mackonka, Erin McGarvey, Nathan (Mary) Kurz, Kaitlyn Kurz, Ben (Hannah) Kurz, Wes Gregory, Sarah (Mark) Wagenaar, Joel Gregory, Jenna (Alex) Evans, Adam (Kasey) Girdner and Matthew (Megan) Girdner.
Elsie's home was always a place of welcome, comfort and love for family, friends or guests where her kindness and generosity were felt. A gentle woman with amazing strength that was seen in her humility, resilience, thoughtfulness and putting others first.
Elsie enjoyed teaching Sunday School for many years and loved to play the piano at home and at church. Her artistic heart came through in her music, decorating and a truly exceptional sense of style. She was also involved in many areas of service in her church and neighborhood over the years responding to needs that she saw. Elsie loved investing time in her 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren who always could feel that she saw them as precious. She will be greatly missed but always remembered by family and friends.
