Maida Helen (Torode, nee Dawson) Coull

Maida passed away peacefully in her 105th year at her apartment at Ina Grafton Gage, where she had resided for the past 6 years. Maida was born in St. Catharines. She was the middle child of Joe and Minnie Dawson. She worked from an early age, first delivering newspapers and then at Grout's Knitting Mill. After her marriage to Bill Torode, she became a floral designer and continued to own and operate Dufferin Gardens Florist until her retirement in 1985. After retirement, she volunteered at the Shaver Hospital. She enjoyed playing cards. She fondly spoke of several memorable vacations with her sister and brother-in-law, Florrie and Bill Rudge. She was the best grandma ever, and she made great pies.

Maida was an active member of Grace Anglican Church from the age of 6, until its closing in 2017. Then, she joined St. George's Anglican Church. Maida was a kind, gentle, compassionate woman who saw the good in everyone. She saw many changes throughout her life, and accepted whatever challenges that came her way without any ado.

Maida is predeceased by her husband Bill Torode (February 1961), her second husband Bill Coull (February 1973), her son Bill Torode Jr. (February 2001), and companion Cec Read (February 2001). Also predeceased by brother Victor (May, deceased), Sister Florrie (Bill, deceased), and her beloved cat Tootsie.

She is survived by her daughter Lynn Healy, who was with her when she passed. Also survived by grandchildren Erin Healy (Jeff Flood), Matthew (Laurel) Healy, and Jennifer (Eric) Offerman, 6 great-grandchildren; Zach, Patrick, Keira, and Will Offerman, and Avery and Aden Healy. She will be lovingly remembered by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, as well as her church family and others.

Maida enjoyed good health throughout her life. Just recently she said to Lynn, "there is really nothing wrong with me. I am old and tired", and she prayed to the Lord to take her. She saw two world wars and two pandemics. She has earned her eternal rest. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

There will be a private graveside service, no visitation. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
