23 May 1945 – 24 April 2014
It is with deep sadness that the family of Lynn Bird announces her peaceful passing at St. Catharines General Hospital. Lynn leaves behind her devoted daughter Stella Jackson Bird Horwood, son-in-law Bill Horwood and grandson Oscar (Ozzie) Horwood who was truly the light of her life. She will be sadly missed by her life companion and soul mate Margaret Griffiths and her children Sarah and Aaron Giovannone. Lynn’s extended family in the United Kingdom, particularly her much loved ‘big’ sister Sally Clowes, brother-in-law Al Clowes and nephews Ben and Tom and their families, will mourn her loss. She will also be missed by Oscar’s grandmother Julie Horwood and his aunt Sheila Horwood.
Lynn was born in Liverpool, England to Frederic and Stella Barnes. She immigrated to Canada from England in 1971 and worked in various social services agencies in Niagara during her long and productive career. At the Niagara Rehab Centre she worked with children and their families, and she loved her years as Executive Director of Big Sisters in Niagara Falls. She found her true calling as a professor at Niagara College when she taught, mentored, and inspired young social work students for 25 years. These graduates, who she called her ‘little blossoms’, are improving the lives of others all over the world.
Lynn believed in social justice, human rights, animal rights and cared for the environment. She was a dedicated volunteer and served on many social services boards. Most recently she was active with the Niagara branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada – Niagara Chapter of Hope. Lynn addressed injustice when she encountered it. She wrote letters, carried placards and stood up for the vulnerable. She advocated, she empowered, she saw the beauty in everyone and she insisted on justice.
Memorial donations can be made to Trinity United Church, to the Niagara branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada – Niagara Chapter of Hope. Lynn has also mentioned that any act of kindness towards others would fill her heart with joy! Family will be greeting friends at Trinity United Church Hall at 15 Pine St. S. in Thorold, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2014. A service to celebrate Lynn’s life will follow at 11 a.m. in the church with a luncheon reception to follow. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to HULSE & ENGLISH FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 75 Church St. (905-684-6346). On-line tributes may be made at www.hulseandenglish.com.
