Pat was born in Deeneystown, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, Ireland to William and Julia Hegarty. He was the oldest of 7 children. He often reminisced about growing up on the family farm. He spoke of harnessing his dog Jack to a wagon, and bringing the neighbours food from the farm. He realised from a young age that he didn't want to be a farmer so pursued a career in Mechanical Engineering. After graduating from college he left his beloved family and homeland and moved to Scotland where he played football (soccer) to earn a living until he immigrated to Canada. He worked for several years in the engineering department of the historic Avro Arrow. In addition to that, he created and operated several travel and tourism related businesses. He also continued playing soccer, and it was during this time that he won free ballroom dance lessons at Arthur Murray's School of dance, where he met a beautiful ballroom dance instructor name Sylvia, who danced up a storm with him and shortly thereafter became his wife, and the mother of his children. Subsequently Pat participated in the construction and management of several Petro Chemical operations throughout Canada. After retiring Pat maintained and was the superintendent at an apartment building for many years.
Pat will be affectionately remembered for his great wit and humour, his sharp intellect, his compassion, kindness and stoicism that was present right to the end as he battled Alzheimer's and cancer. That twinkle never left his eyes.
Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Bastedo and Dr. Berti for their incredible care and kindness shown to Pat. A special thanks to his dedicated PSW Joby. Extra special thanks to his cherished granddaughter Jade who tirelessly cared for his every need, day and night, with unparalleled love and kindness the last week of his life.
