98 years
Born in Gillingham, Kent England, Vera saw the Great Depression, endured
the bombing in London during World War Two, married Victor Henry Austin
and immigrated to Canada on the Queen Elizabeth II. Vera and Victor had
three children; Daniel, Jennifer and Roger, lived for some years in the
United States before returning to Ontario. Among her many
accomplishments Vera cared for her husband following his debilitating
stroke, went back to work as a sought after tailor and restored the family
home from a failing condition to its fully restored beauty now officially
recognized as “The Phelps-Austin Heritage Home”. A lifelong vegetarian
and animal lover, the house was always filled with dogs, cats, even rabbits
and Guinea pigs. Vera’s final years were spent at Oakwood Park Lodge in
Niagara Falls in daily contact with family and friends. Pre-deceased by her
husband and eldest son Daniel, Vera passed due to the COVID-19
pandemic but at rest and in peace. She and the final few members of “The
Greatest Generation,’ shall be missed. Vera will always be remembered for
her favorite expression: “Any News?”
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Niagara Falls Humane
Society where she adopted her dear Emma.
