

John was born in Sherard Mississippi on March 11,1932 to Lawrence and Alberta Lumpkin, He was preceded in death by his and parents and siblings, Warren, Lawrence, Irene, Ellis, Henry, Ruth Mae, and Annie Pearl. John is survived by his sister, Alberta Lumpkin, his daughter, Lisa Mason Brown of Tennessee, Lisa's husband, Kevin Brown, his grandchildren, Jasmine Sutton (Jarred Hobbs) and James (Amber) Sutton, and his great-granddaughter, Jordan Hobbs. He was the loving uncle of many nieces and nephews, many cousins and dear friends.
John moved to St. Louis at the age of 18 and worked several jobs before finding a career with the St. Louis Water Division where he worked for 30 years, retiring in 1988. John liked sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and the Rams when they were here. He was adventurous and always looking for something to do.He looked out for his family and loved them dearly, and was very attentive to his brother, Henry. When John had his stroke, he stayed with and was cared for by his sister, Irene, for many years before her passing, After she died, John was cared for by his sister, Alberta.
John was an avid gardener. He loved planting tomatoes, green, onions, and other vegetables in his garden. He had such an outstanding ability that as a teenager he won awards for his gardening skills. Many decades ago, John purchased and owned a four family unit in University City that most of his family members resided in. He charged modest rental fees and this helped the younger generations get a good start in being responsible adults, but eventually his sister Alberta had to sell it due to unforeseen circumstances.
John was baptized, and his baptism was a cherished moment, symbolizing his faith and commitment to a life guided by grace and compassion. He was kind and generous, funny and mischievous. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Memorial Service will be Saturday, May 17, 1-5pm at Hoffmeister Colonial Mortuary, 6464 Chippewa Street, Saint Louis 63109.
