Born May 8, 1936, in East St. Louis, Illinois, Leroy went on to attend Long Elementary and Cleveland High Schools in St. Louis before becoming a life long member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 36, working for several companies until his retirement.
As a resident of the St. Louis Hills community, Leroy was active in the neighborhood as a block captain and, with Sondra and their chocolate labs, a friendly greeter to neighbors, kids and pets heading to Francis Park for a walk.
A man of faith, Leroy served as a deacon and member of Kingshighway and Kirkwood Baptist Churches. A great friend to many, he was always ready to bring a smile to others with a corny joke or lend a hand when someone’s home project didn’t go as planned.
Above all, Leroy was a man who cared about his family who could always be available to pick up grandchildren from school, meet the repair person at a son’s house or simply relax sitting on the back porch with Sondra.
In addition to his wife, Leroy is survived by sons Roger (Jeanette) and Brian Grider, granddaughters Amber and Layla, and sister Nancy (James) Martin. He was a dear brother-in-law to Rita (Bud) Stallings and uncle to Renee (Tony) Alivento, Robyn (Bill Cook), Robert (Kim) Catron, Jr., Laura (Ted) Satcher and Lisa (David) Nix. He was preceded in death by infant son Bruce, his father Leroy, mother Ann Richardson, and sister Roseann Riley.
A celebration of Leroy’s life will be held Wednesday, Dec. 1, with visitation at 10 a.m. followed by the service at noon, at Hoffmeister Colonial Mortuary, 6464 Chippewa Street, St. Louis, MO 63109. Internment at Sunset Memorial Park,10180 Gravois Road.
