Died on September 15, 2012 at St. Joseph's hospital, St Paul, MN after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 22, 1933 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, to Bernard and Lucy (Kueber) Spain. Charles graduated from Sacred Heart High School, East Grand Forks, MN and earned a Bachelor's of Science from St. John's University, Collegeville, MN. After college he returned to northwest Minnesota and taught English in Mahnomen and surrounding areas. He also earned a Master's in Library Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. In 1979 he moved to St. Paul, MN and took a job with the IRS, retiring in 1996. Charles enjoyed music and held season tickets for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra for several years. He was also a frequent volunteer at St. Joseph's Hospital. Charles is survived by his sister, Sister Jeannine Spain, Crookston, MN; brother David (Suzie) Spain, Lake City, MN; nephews, Benjamin Spain, Los Angeles, CA and John Spain, Minnetonka, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial Mass 11 AM Friday September 28, 2012 at Wulff-Godbout Funeral Home, 560 W. 7th St., St. Paul with a gathering of family and friends 1 hour prior to service. Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials to South Texas Empowerment of Women Center, Rio Grande City, TX.
