Born in Chicago, IL, Ross graduated from Barrington High School in 1966. After graduation, he entered the US Army, serving in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969. He was awarded 2 Purple Hearts, an Air Medal and Combat Infantry Badge, among other decorations.
After his military service, Ross worked at a number of occupations, then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1979. He worked as a software engineer for Control Data and its many spinoffs, eventually retiring from Siemens. He loved his work and always highly respected his colleagues.
Ross’s military service led him to a strong passion for causes related to tolerance, peace, justice and personal freedom. In 1990 he ran for the office of Governor of the State of Minnesota on the Grassroots Party ticket, supporting the legalization of marijuana.
Ross was a tinkerer extraordinaire. He could build or repair anything, from riding lawnmowers to adding a 3 season porch to his home. He owned many sports cars in his life, convertibles ranging from an MG Midget to a Mazda Miata. If it could be quantified by numbers, Ross loved it. Recently he was fascinated by a solar energy system he installed at his home, and another for the cabin at his recently acquired recreational property.
Ross and his loving wife Eileen Foley were married for 51 years. Together they raised the family that meant everything to him: their 2 children, Megan (Chad Haugejorden) and Tim (Lindsay Bothe Culverhouse). Their children were the delight of their lives, along with their 3 granddaughters, Cadence, Quinn and Charlotte "Charlie". He is also survived by his brother Mark (Linda Roos) of Spring Green, WI, beloved sisters-in-law Mary, JoAnn, Margaret, Monica and Rita, as well as many nephews and nieces, plus many longstanding friends.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 2pm on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Wulff Funeral Home, with a visitation one hour prior.
In lieu of flowers, please donate blood or to the American Civil Liberties Union. For the services, please dress as Ross would have, in jeans, a sweater and comfortable shoes. White socks optional.
