He is preceded in death by his parents, Roman and Euphemia “Dude” Kroll. He leaves behind his loving wife, Mary Kroll, his daughters, Ann (Gero), Michelle (Ryan), Melissa (Ben), and his grandchildren, Carter, Courtney, Ella, Lance, Dylan and Eli, and Ryan Jr., his siblings David (Lynn), Mary (Tony) and Teresa.
Steve grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, a true “Eastsider,” living off of Orange Street with his family and attended St. Casimir’s Catholic School and Johnson High School. He met Mary, the love of his life, just before he was drafted to the United States Marine Corps. He served from 1970-1972 and Mary and Steve married in July of 1972. Steve was an amazing “girl dad” having three daughters. Steve worked for Northern Iron in the foundry for 33 years of his life. He left to work at 3M for a couple of years until he found his way into apartment maintenance working for MidContinent Management for seven years before retiring. His work friends became family.
In retirement, Steve picked up his grandkids from school almost every day for over the past 10 years. During summers, he would take the grandkids fishing, exploring, or for “unofficial” driving practice. There was adventure around every corner with Papa. He showed up to every game, concert, play, or other school events.
Steve spent his days taking care of everyone around him - cutting grass, doing handiwork, picking you up when the car broke down, or giving you a ride to go to the store or doctor, or bringing treats during a visit. He was always there, lending a helping hand.
His generous spirit is only outweighed by the love he had for his family and friends. Steve loved Christmas and captured the spirit of Christmas every day of his life. He poured his heart into his annual Christmas letter and reminded us to spread love and spend time together. His faith was strong and he felt deeply. When you were hurting, he was hurting too. He prayed for you. He showed up for you. He believed in you. He cheered for your small wins and celebrated your big victories.
To know Steve, you knew that you were blessed. Steve’s spirit will live on in everyone who knew him. Honor him with a kind act, visit a neighbor, spend time with your loved ones, and always “Pay it forward”.
