Angelo Fonte

Angelo Fonte went to be with the Lord on October 9, 2023. A Tampa native, he was born on August 20, 1933. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ignazio G. and Rosalie Fonte, his 6 brothers, Morris Fonte, Joe Fonte, I. G. Fonte, Jr., Sam Fonte, Frank Fonte and Harry Fonte and 3 sisters, Louise Fonte Maggio, Angie Fonte Clemente and Carmella Fonte Campo. Carol Lumia, whom he married, also preceded him in death. She bore 3 children, Kelly Fonte, Angelo Fonte, Jr. and Rosemary Fonte. Both Kelly and Rosemary preceded him in death. Angelo later married Dorothy Williams Diaz in 1974 and she passed away 10 years before him.

Angelo graduated from Plant High School, Tampa where he played football. An active Catholic and patriot, he served in the US Army stationed in CO. He was involved in civic and charity work at Mary Help of Christians, Jesuit, Sacred Heart, Academy and was a member of Tampa’s Sports Club. Angelo was President of Fonte Brothers Pioneer Cleaners, Tampa’s first drycleaning company in 1915. Angelo was instrumental in the daily operation of the 2 main locations and satellite locations until he retired. He is survived by his beloved children, Donna Diaz Thompson (Chuck Thompson), of Tampa, FL, Ed Diaz (Tricha Diaz), of Weaverville, NC, Debbie Diaz Harker (Dennis Harker), of Gadsden, AL, Mike Diaz (Dyna Diaz), of Martha’s Vineyard, MA, Angelo Fonte, Jr., of Sarasota, FL, 7 grandchildren, Raina Bass (Steve), of Sarasota, FL, Justin Sanchez, of Tampa, FL, Ryan Thompson (Nicole), of Orlando, FL, Chris Diaz (Ashley), of Roswell, GA, Marlene Buchanan (Ryan), of Austin, TX, Christina Simmons (Wade), of West Tisbury, MA, Michael Diaz (Dawn), of Windham, NH and 12 great-grandchildren.

A wake will be held at Gonzalez Funeral Home on Oct. 18th located at 7209 N. Dale Mabry Hwy. from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

A funeral Mass will be held on Oct. 19th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 509 N. Florida Ave., Tampa, FL at 10 am. He will be interned immediately following at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.
