Henry Anthony Cacciatore, M.D., 86, passed away peacefully on July 21st, at his home. He was born in Tampa, FL on January 4, 1936 and grew up in Ybor City. After graduating from Jefferson High School in 1953, he attended Tulane University and then went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Miami in 1961. He completed his internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL then returned to Tampa to begin a five-year residency in surgery and urology at Tampa General Hospital. In his fifth year of that program, and at the height of the Viet Nam war, he was called to serve his country and did so proudly. In 1967 Henry, his wife Lorna and their three children - Angela, Lia and Larry - moved to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, where they lived until Henry was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, having achieved the rank of Major.
In 1969 he returned to Tampa with his family and, for the next five decades, devoted his life and practice to the care and well-being of thousands of patients, many of whom came to know him not just as a doctor, but also as a friend. During his career, he also served as Chief of Staff of the Centro Asturiano Hospital and as Chief of Urology at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Though the practice of medicine and the care of his patients was his calling, his keen intellect fueled a wide array of interests outside of medicine. His love of the water led him to build the first two of the many boats he owned over the years which provided for countless hours of fishing and diving with family and friends. His annual family trips to Key West soon became a tradition which continues to this day. He was also an avid hunter, a Harley rider, a golfer, a welder and even piloted his own plane. He loved photography, made wine, played the accordion as well as the mandolin and, together with his wife Lorna, travelled the world over their 62 years of marriage. Henry’s achievements were many but perhaps his greatest was being able to finish knowing that he had nothing left on his bucket list.
He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Carmelina Cacciatore. He is survived by his loving wife, Lorna, his daughters, Angela (Bill) McLaughlin, Lia (George) Guerra, his son, Larry (Tiffany) Cacciatore, his “adopted” son, Sam “Bubba” Rodriguez, as well as his grandchildren, Collin McLaughlin, Melissa Guerra, George Guerra, Jr., Zachary McDargh, Henry Patrick Cacciatore and his beloved dog, Bruno.
A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 2:30 PM at the Tampa Yacht and Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Henry’s memory to: The Children’s Dream Fund, 1600 23rd Ave N., St. Petersburg, FL 33713.
