

Born on September 19, 1932, in Pensacola, Florida, at 4:22 PM, John led a life marked by service, quiet strength, and unwavering love for his family. He proudly served his country for 22 years in the United States Air Force and later continued his dedication to public service through volunteering for MOAA at MacDill AFB and Operation Helping Hands in Tampa.
On April 6, 1968, John married the love of his life, Ann. Together, they built a strong and loving family rooted in faith and resilience. John served as a deacon in his church and was a pillar of his community, admired for his steady presence and calm leadership in times of both joy and sorrow.
John was a passionate man who found joy in simple pleasures: golf, model airplanes, great food, traveling the world, church fellowship, college football, and most of all, time with his family. A lifelong aviation enthusiast, he was known for his fascination with flight and the skies above.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, Willa Powless, and his cherished grandchildren: Jake Powless, Johnny Powless, Ava Powless, Crystal Purviance, Cierra Purviance, Brittany Garcia, Joey Purviance, and Chris Davignon. His legacy continues through them, as well as through the many lives he touched with his wisdom and grace.
John now joins in eternal peace his dear wife Ann Massey and their three daughters, Joann Massey, Cynthia Massey, and Sandra Massey.
A visitation for John will be held Friday, September 26, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at First Reformed Church of Tampa, 8283 W Hillsborough Ave, Tampa, FL 33615 with funeral services beginning at the church 10:00AM. A committal service with full military honors will then follow at 1:30 PM at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Rd 72, Sarasota, FL 34241.
John Massey will be remembered as a man of strength, humility, and deep love a steady hand and guiding light in the lives of all who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed, and his memory forever cherished.
