

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Wheyland Rothenburg, “Mike”, beloved husband, father, and friend. He passed away unexpectedly on November 11th, 2025 in Tampa, FL at the age of 70.
Mike is survived by his wife, Margo Sue Rothenburg, and children, Morgan Paige Rothenburg and Jeffrey Alden Rothenburg (Morgan). He is preceded in death by his parents Wheyland Rothenburg and Evelyn Baggerly, and his sister Mary Rothenburg Fry.
Mike was born on September 4th in Kansas City, Missouri to Wheyland Rothenburg & Evelyn Rothenburg, and spent most of his childhood in Plantation, FL. He graduated from University of Florida in 1979 with a degree in Environmental Engineering and went on to receive his M.B.A in Finance at Florida Southern College in 1983. He moved to the Tampa Bay area after college where he met and married the love of his life, Margo Sue Noim in 1986. In the course of 4 years, they welcomed 2 children into their home and Mike taught them values around hard work & kindness to all. He was a caring and devoted husband & father.
Mike worked for a number of environmental firms and ended his career as the Environmental Department Manager at Intertek/PSI and Consultant for WD Environmental Services. Mike was an accomplished Environmental Engineer with a number of different licenses & accolades; Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Florida Licensed Asbestos Consultant (FLAC) and General Contractor (GC). He also received a lifetime achievement award for his work on the Florida Everglades Restoration Project. He was dedicated to teaching others who were also passionate about clean air, water and soil. His legacy in his field of work will live on through those he mentored along the way.
He was an active member of the University of Florida Chi Phi - Theta Delta Chapter and volunteered as President at the UF Chi Phi Housing Corp in recent years. Mike lived a life driven by hard work, his desire for continuous learning, and his love for his family, friends and animals. He was known for his intelligence, sense of humor, patience, and his ability to make anyone feel welcome. When he wasn’t working, he had a passion for Florida Gators football, reading books by Carl Hiaasen and Tim Dorsey, and spending time at the beach with his family. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled on January 10, 2026 at Blount & Curry Life Event Center (605 S MacDill Ave, Tampa, FL 33609) from 1:00 - 4:00pm, with a ceremony starting at 1:30pm. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mike’s life.
The family would like to thank Dr. Xavier Prida (Tampa, FL) for many years of Mike’s care and Emory Fry (Newberg, OR) for his dedication to advocate for Mike’s health in recent months.
