Arthur James Underwood, age 91, of Temple died Wednesday, April 8, 2009 in a local hospital. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, April 13 at Val Verde Cemetery with Larry L. Ruckman officiating. Visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 PM Saturday, April 11 at the funeral home. Mr. Underwood was born July 1, 1917 in Val Verde to Perry Monroe and Lea Nora (Gregory) Underwood. He was a longtime resident of Pasadena, Texas where he worked for Champion Paper Company. He married Doris E. Allen in 1940. She preceded him in death in 2001. He moved to Temple in 1983 and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Lillie Franke and husband, Preston of Houston, Ann Ruckman and husband, Larry L. of Garland, four grandchildren, Michael Franke of El Paso, Todd Franke of Houston, Laura Thomas of Lucas and Denise Polk of Houston and nine great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
