

Dr. Stafford L. Norman, age 90 of Temple, formerly of McAlester, OK, died Tuesday April 19, 2011 at his residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM Thursday, April 21, 2011 at Grace Presbyterian Church in Temple with Rev. Kathy Forschner and Dr. Thomas Allen officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Oak Hill Cemetery in McAlester, OK. with the committal service performed by Dr. Tom Murray. The family will receive visitors after the committal service from 3:00 to 4:30 PM at the AmericInn Hotel of McAlester, 609 South George Nigh Expressway, McAlester, OK 74501. Dr. Norman was born on November 17, 1920 in Coleman County, Texas to the late John B. Norman and Elsa Stafford Norman. He married Mattie Ellen Hood on May 15, 1945. Dr. Norman was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, serving in WWII and during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1951. He graduated from the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston in 1945 and did his residency training in internal medicine in Memphis, TN. Dr. Norman was board certified before entering private practice in McAlester, OK. In 1974, he moved to Temple and was on the staff of the Olin E. Teague VA Hospital and was associated with the Texas A&M University College of Medicine in College Station, where he served on the Admissions Board for the first five years of its existence. He retired in 1989. Dr. Norman was an active member and elder at Grace Presbyterian Church in Temple. He was preceded in death by his parents, John B. and Elsa Stafford Norman; a son, Kenneth Paul Norman; a daughter, Glenda Diane Norman; a brother, John B. Norman, a sister, Billie Slusser and her husband Bill; a niece, Pat Slusser Enright and a nephew, Wm. "Billy" Norman.. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mattie Ellen Norman of Temple; a son, Charles Wayne Norman and wife Desiree of Frisco; a daughter, Nancy Ann Norman Vargas and husband Michael of Temple; four grandchildren, Chase Stafford Norman and Tara of Dallas, Daniella Desiree Norman of Frisco, Amanda Louise Acosta of Temple and Michael William Acosta, III of Temple; three great grandchildren, Destiny Cheyenne Acosta, Logan Kane Whittemore & Mattie Ellen Whittemore; sisters-in-law, Adele Norman of Ocala, FL and Elizabeth Hood Ray of Lincoln, NE; two nieces, Sandra Jo Scott and husband Robert of Monroe, CT and Gail Stevens and husband Jerry of Ocala, FL; one nephew, John F. Norman, D.D.S. of Bradenton, FL; and a special friend "like a daughter", Andrine Mwaura and boys Amani and Immanueli.
