Dr. Thomas W. "Doc" Rowan, DDS ,MS of Temple, TX grabbed his favorite Browning 20 ga. shotgun, joined his brother Stanley, and hunting companion Chief at that eternal hunting lease in Heaven (December 25,2014). Remembered by many of his patients as that crazy singing orthodontist, he was also remembered in his home town of Okolona, MS for the mule incident' (let's just say it's difficult to lead a mule out of the third floor library and down three flights of stairs). Of course, those of us who know him remember him for his extreme generosity and loyalty to family and friends. Born October 9, 1932, Doc grew up in rural Mississippi, trained bird dogs in Canada, joined the Navy reserves, served in the Korean War, graduated from Mississippi State, and earned his DDS, MS in Orthodontics from University of Tennessee before moving to Temple, TX in 1960. Serving the community as an Orthodontist for 50 plus years, he also served his church, First Baptist Church of Temple as a youth Sunday School teacher and as a Deacon. Thomas married his hometown sweetheart, Nannette Stewart, on October 16, 1954 in Okolona, MS. Many thought this was a shotgun wedding, but Nanna knows otherwise. Survived by his loving wife Nannette, Doc is also survived by five children, twelve grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Doc and Nanna's children are (from oldest to youngest) Woodson Rowan and wife Sherry of Lubbock, TX, Nan Gunter and husband John of Dallas, TX, Preston Rowan and wife Lisa of College Station, TX, Margaret Davis and husband Phil of Ft. Worth, TX, and Vivian Norment and husband Russell also of Ft. Worth. Doc is also survived by his "other" son, Shawn Rowan and wife Angie of Cypress, TX. The family can be found hosting a Celebration of Life Visitation on Sunday, December 28, 2014 from 4:00-6:00 pm at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home located at 3110 Airport Rd, Temple, Tx. On Monday, December 29th, there will be a small family gathering at the graveside followed by an 11:00 am Memorial Service at First Baptist Church, Temple, TX. In lieu of flowers, Nanna requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Temple or the charity of your choice.
