Evelyn Smetana Kelarek passed peacefully from this life to enjoy eternity in heaven on November 29, 2023, at the age of 88. She leaves behind a legacy of love, joy and devotion for those who knew her. She will be greatly missed as a mom, Granny, aunt, cousin and friend.
Evelyn enjoyed celebrations and laughter – whether on the lake with friends, during holidays with family or even catering meals at the KC Hall. While many are devoted to careers, causes or ideals, Evelyn was devoted to those she loved – particularly her sons and granddaughters. That devotion began in their childhood and extended into adulthood.
Evelyn was born in Oenaville, Texas on June 14, 1935, to John & Mathilda Kahlig Smetana. She attended schools in Rosebud and Temple and graduated from Temple High School in 1953. She married Edmond Kelarek on July 24,1954 at St Mary’s Catholic Church. At the time of Edmond’s death in 2022, they had enjoyed 67 years together.
Evelyn was a founding member of St Luke’s Catholic Church in Temple. She served faithfully as a Eucharistic Minister, as well as being a member of the Women’s Society and the Money Counting team.
Evelyn retired from Texell Credit Union in April 2010 after 24 years of serving customers with a warm and friendly smile.
Evelyn is survived by three sons Kevin Kelarek and Kelly Kelarek both of Temple; Kenny Kelarek and wife Jennifer of Salado, and two granddaughters Hannah Kelarek of Deer Park, TX and Sarah Kate Zapalac and husband Brady of Bellville, TX.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St Luke’s Catholic Church. Visitation will be Monday, December 4, 2023 from 6:00-8:00 with the rosary beginning at 7:30 PM at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple.
Memorials may be given in Evelyn’s name to either St Luke’s Catholic Church Women’s Society or the Seaton Cemetery Association.
