

Homer H. "Chad" Hanna passed away peacefully on July 9, 2012, in his home in Temple. A visitation with the family is scheduled from 7 - 8 p.m. on July 11 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple. The service is scheduled for 1 p.m. on July 12 at Greenwood Cemetery Mausoleum in Fort Worth. He was born Jan. 30, 1920, in Lubbock to Clara B. and John Q. Hanna. He graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1936 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1938. He was transferred to the Philippines in 1940, and captured by Japanese forces on the island of Corregidor in May 1942. After being imprisoned in the Philippines and Japan, he was liberated by U.S. forces in September 1945. After completing pre-medical requirements at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, he graduated from Southwestern Medical School in 1952. After an internship at Percy Jones Army Hospital in Michigan and a residency in otolaryngology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., Dr. Hanna was chief of ENT Services at Valley Forge Army Hospital in Pennsylvania; Gorgas Hospital in the Canal Zone in Panama; and assistant chief of otolaryngology at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colo. He retired from the Army in December 1964 with the rank of major. He continued to practice medicine and teach, serving as the Otolaryngology Branch Chief of the U.S.A.F. School of Aerospace Medicine in San Antonio until 1982. From 1983 until 1992, he worked as a long-term care physician inspector for the Texas Department of Health in Temple. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bobbie; his daughter, Cindy Ellis of The Woodlands; his son Jim of Trophy Club and his wife Lindy; four grandchildren, including Harold Ellis of Houston, Jenny Ellis of Richmond, Va., Chris Hanna of Garland and Kelli Hanna of Arlington; one great-granddaughter, Lily Ellis of Richmond, Va.; a brother, John Paul Hanna, of Quitman, Ark.; and a sister, Carolyn Conlin, of Odessa. He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.
