She died Wednesday, October 22, in Baylor Scott & White Continuing Care Hospital.
She graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in Houston in 1963. (As number 3 in the class, as all her grandkids knew).
Janet graduated from the University of Texas where she received a BS in Education and was a campus leader in the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, The Orange Jackets and The Cordettes.
While at UT, Janet went on a blind date with Donald Grobowsky, and they married in 1969.
The Grobowsky’s lived in Austin where Don was a federal bank examiner, and Janet completed her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction. Don was a great typist, and he worked diligently typing her thesis.
In 1973, they were blessed with their eldest daughter Jill and more blessings followed with daughter Sara, born in 1975.
Donald accepted a job with Temple National Bank, and the family relocated to Temple in 1976.
While in Temple, Jan was incredibly active in The Contemporaries, The City Federation of Women’s Clubs, PTA, Garden Club, First Methodist Church, and was President of the Cultural Activities Center Board.
In 1988, Donald and partners opened First State Bank in Temple, and Jan went back to teaching school at Merideth Elementary.
Jan loved regaling her kids and grandkids with stories from her 13 years there, teaching 3rd - 5th grade. She made lifetime friends with her fellow teachers at Meridith. After years of teaching, she retired just as her first grandchild, Luke Burnett, was born.
She loved being “Gigi” and was smothered in love with a total of 5 grandbabies.
Between swooping in and caretaking for her exhausted daughters, she and Donald enjoyed traveling and sharing their time watching a myriad of grandkids’ sporting events.
She is survived by: her husband of 57 years Don Grobowsky of Temple; her daughters Jill Grobowsky Bergus (Jeff), and Sara Grobowsky Burnett (Ricky) of Dallas; her grandchildren Luke Burnett (22), Lauren Burnett (19), Lindsay Burnett (17), Kasch Bergus (20), and Cade Bergus (18); her brother Clyde King Jr. (Elizabeth) of Richmond; her niece and nephew Myles Naso of Austin and James King of Richmond; And a very sad Maltese puppy named Sadie.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple Grobowsky Surgical Center and/or to the First Methodist Church of Temple.
A memorial service will be held at First Methodist Church 102 N 2nd St, Temple, TX 76501 on November 7, 2025 at 10am.
