Jeffrey Ray Houston, age 43 of Temple, passed away on April 25 at Our Hospice House in Temple, Texas. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 1st at 2:00pm at First Baptist Church of Academy, Tx. with burial at North Belton Cemetery.
Jeffrey was born on January 7, 1981, in Austin, Texas to Carroll and Sharon Houston. He attended Holland ISD schools starting in kindergarten and graduated from Holland High School in 1999. Jeffrey worked several jobs between high school and college including Jones Home and Auto, UPS and Sunbelt RV’s.
He attended Temple College where he met his wife, Laura. They transferred to Sam Houston State University where they graduated in 2005. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with a double minor in history and secondary education.
Jeff and Laura were married on July 8, 2006 in Temple, Texas.
Jeff began coaching and teaching in Conroe ISD at Knox Jr. High School in The Woodlands, Texas. Jeff taught and coached multiple sports including football, basketball, track, and soccer. Jeff spent time at Conroe Caney Creek High School where he coached football, basketball, soccer, and track. He was named Offensive Coordinator for football.
In 2011 their son Drew was born. Jeff was so proud of Drew and Drew became one of Jeff’s biggest fans.
After coaching in Conroe ISD, the family moved back to central Texas. Jeff took a varsity offensive line and head track coaching job at Ellison High School in Killeen ISD. Jeff left Ellison and took a job at Academy ISD to start the first ever Boys and Girls Soccer Program and he became the Offensive Coordinator in football. After several years at Academy, Jeff decided to go back and get his master’s degree in educational administration. He graduated with a Master’s in Educational Administration from Lamar University in December 2019. While working on his Master’s, he took a job at Harker Heights High School as a Special Education teacher. He became the Truancy Attendance Officer and then an Assistant Principal.
Jeff enjoyed watching the history and science channels, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, college football, and was a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys. He cherished traveling with his family, going to casinos, and cooking and BBQ’ing for his family and friends. He loved listening to old country music legends like Haggard, Twitty, Jennings, Jones, and guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan.
He enjoyed watching and coaching Drew’s sports teams. He was also very involved in youth sports. He touched the lives of many youths by serving as a youth coach at Belton Christian Youth Center, Belton Youth Baseball Association, 323 Flag Football, and FC Belton soccer leagues.
Jeff loved his family deeply and this past year he fought hard to win his battle with cancer. He exemplified courage, determination, and dignity and was very thankful for all the friends and family who helped him.
Jeff was preceded in death by his grandparents, Hudson and Evelyn Leshikar, George and Dorothy Houston, Edward and Mary Doerfler and Paul and Margaret Baron; uncles, George Wayne Houston and Charles Houston, and an aunt, Linda Kelso and her husband Wayne.
He is survived by his wife, Laura, of seventeen years, and son, Drew; his parents, Carroll and Sharon Houston; his sister, Carrie Romero; his in-laws, Mary and Jimmy Doerfler; his sister-in-law, Angela Williams and husband, Kyle; nephews, Ben Romero and Cooper Williams and niece, Charli Williams. He is also survived by his uncles, Roger Houston and wife Judy, Peter Baron, Mike Baron and wife Pam; aunts, Janet Nelson, Sandra Page and husband Steve, Barbara Leshikar, Dr. Peggy Leshikar, Margaret Sherburne and husband John, Eileen Myers, Susie Day, Karen Keller and husband Paul, Debby Erchull and husband Jim; and numerous loving cousins.
