John Kollen Blevins, beloved child of the King, was called into the presence of Jesus on Thursday, September 20, 2018. This short description of his earthly life cannot truly represent all that he was during this life. John was born on March 4, 1948 in Beaumont, Texas to Hugh and Wilhelmina Blevins of Beaumont, Texas. John married Cynthia Ann Carameros on June 16, 1973 in Houston, Texas. Their Christ-like marriage of 45 years was an example and blessing to their children, Amy and Scott and to countless others.
John graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas. He spent his first year at Texas Christian University where he majored in zoology and math, and then went to the United States Air Force Academy. He graduated from University of Texas at Austin with High Honors with a Bachelor of Science degree. Following this he completed both medical school and a residency in pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where he was chief resident. He was Board Certified in Pediatric Medicine.
Dr. Blevins began his pediatric practice in Conroe, Texas in 1977. In 1990 he joined the senior staff at Scott & White. He served as the Clinical Director for medical students and was the Program Director for the Medical Pediatric Residency program. In addition to this, John served on the Admissions Committee for Texas A & M Medical School. As a hospitalist and the director of Southland Villa Children’s Nursing Home (the “Pumpkin Patch”) for 15 years, his calling and commitment to caring for children was evident to all. As a gifted teacher and mentor, Dr. Blevins trained hundreds of medical students and residents. Many of these students served alongside him as medical missionaries on multiple trips to Mexico, China and Africa. He was the beloved pediatrician to thousands of families in Central Texas. For more than 25 years, Dr. Blevins and his wife Cindy opened their home and their hearts to medical students and many others for weekly Bible study, family dinners, and impromptu heart-to-heart talks. He served as a flight surgeon in the United State Air Force Reserve and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel, serving in active duty during the First Gulf War. In the early 1980’s he was a founding leader of Covenant Christian School in Conroe, Texas. In spite of these many weighty accomplishments, Dr. Blevins considered it all “as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus Christ my Lord.” Philippians 3:8. His Christ-like selfless love for others was poured out to his family, to the Body of Christ, to his community, and to the world. He loved spending time with family and friends, whether over a good meal, playing basketball, hunting, traveling, or playing with his grandkids.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Cindy; his daughter Amy Heidmann and husband John of Orlando, Florida, and his son Scott of Austin; grandchildren Sophie, Will, and Christian Heidmann; his brother, Hugh Blevins and wife Jan, of Dallas and his sister Elizabeth Johnson and her husband Aaron of Richardson; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and beloved brothers and sisters in Christ.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Hugh and Wilhelmina Blevins and his grandparents Gerrit and Henrietta Kropscott and Eugene and Mary Emma Blevins.
In John’s Bible he wrote, “He chose me before the foundation of the world to exercise the greatness of his power and grace – He was resurrected, and I will be as well.”
A memorial service will be held at 12 noon Monday, September 24th at Temple Bible Church – Creekside Center with Pastor Gary DeSalvo officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be 4:00 – 6:00 PM Sunday at Temple Bible Church Creekside Center.
