

Joseph M. (Joey) Alvarez, age 40 of Belton, died Sunday, December 30, 2018 in a local hospital. Services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, January 5th at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with Rev. Gary DeSalvo officiating. Burial will follow at Bellwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 PM Friday, January 4th at the funeral home.
He was born on October 6, 1978, in Bellflower, California to Jose and Paula Alvarez. Throughout his vibrant life, Joey acquired many honors. His greatest honor was being a father. But, his love for the Temple Wildcats helped make him the man he was. As an avid athlete, Joey won Academic All District, All District, All Centex, All super Centex, and All State recognition as a quarterback for the Wildcats. He currently holds many records at Temple High School. He also received recognition as an All District, All Centex, and All State Catcher along with being selected as 1997 Pre-Season All American in baseball and holds records in the Top 5 for batting average, hits, doubles, homeruns, and runs batted in at Temple High School. Joey was drafted by the Atlanta Braves out of high school, but decided to take advantage of a full scholarship to Northeast Community College before transferring to Southwest Texas University with another full baseball scholarship.
Joey’s most recent years were spent working at Midwestern Mud as Senior Procurement Manager. He loved spending time with his kids and watching Longhorn football as well as Braves baseball.
He is survived by his two sons, Cade Edward and Cannon, his partner and longtime love, Leah Kallina McGuire and her children, Rebekah, Allen, and Andrew, his father and step-mother, Jose Alvarez and Rosemary Condo, his brothers and sister-in-law, Eric Alvarez, Scott and Jennifer Alvarez, and Kevin Alvarez, as well as many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Ramiro Martinez, Derek Stanford, Trey Parker, Matt Meeks, Justin Wadsworth, Frankie Ramirez, Craig Martin, Brandon Goode and Chris Sustaita.
