

Nancy Horton, age 79, of Bartlett passed away on Friday, June 28, 2024, at a Temple hospital. She was born on June 22, 1945, in Temple, the daughter of Edwin Symm and Rosie Hanusch Symm. She was baptized and confirmed in her Christian faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in The Grove, Texas.
Nancy graduated from Belton High School in 1963. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology from Texas Woman’s University in 1967. She began her teaching and coaching career in Goliad ISD. While living in Goliad, she met her future husband, Howard Horton. They were married on July 28, 1973, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in The Grove, Texas. After their three children were born, Nancy solely devoted her time to family life for eleven years. She resumed her teaching and coaching career at Zion Lutheran School in Walburg for eight years. She worked as a teacher in Bartlett ISD until her retirement in 2010. After retirement, she enjoyed time with her grandchildren and served as a substitute teacher in local school districts. She volunteered as the high school youth director and as a Sunday School teacher at Zion Lutheran Church. In her spare time, Nancy enjoyed sewing, gardening, travelling, and spending time with family and friends.
Nancy is survived by her husband Howard of Bartlett, her daughter Heidi Cowan and husband Calvin of Moffat, her son Scott Horton and wife Piper of Denver, CO, and daughter Stacy Andel and husband Keith of Temple. She has nine grandchildren: Luke and Ryan Cowan of Moffat, Sloan and Stella Horton of Denver, Dustin Andel of Irving, Rachel Andel of Hockley, Courtney Andel of Temple, and Karys and Kamryn Rogers of Temple. She is also survived by her brother Carl Symm and wife Barbie of Lorena, one sister-in-law, Sherry Symm of The Grove, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents Edwin and Rosie Symm, her brother Rodgers Symm, and her brother and sister-in-law, Bubba and Marion Horton.
A visitation will take place on Friday, July 19, 2024, from 6-8 pm at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home located at 3110 Airport Road, Temple, TX 76504. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at 9:30 am at Zion Lutheran Church cemetery in Walburg. Following burial, a memorial service will be held in the church sanctuary at Zion at 10 am. Everyone is welcome to attend both services. The church address is 6001 FM 1105, Georgetown, TX 78626.
