Mr. Hughes died of covid Sunday in a Temple Living Facility.
Mr. Hughes was born May 11, 1923 in Lillian, Texas to Pate E. Hughes, Sr. and Myrtle Johnson Hughes. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the Europe and Italian Theaters and was awarded the ETO Ribbon with 1 Battle Star, Victory Ribbon and GC Medal. He married Margaret Eleanor White July 18, 1949 in Galveston. She preceded him in death January 10, 2004. He worked at Ft. Hood as a mechanic. He was also a mechanic for several automotive shops in Temple. He was a member of First Assembly of God in Troy and was a member of American Legion Post 133 and the VFW. He lived in the Troy, Temple and Belton area most of his life.
Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by two sons Dr. Charles Flanders and Jerry Flanders sisters Madelle Brumbelow, Faye Beck McKoen, Mary Lou Puckett and JoAnn Pagel, nieces Kim Pagel and Michele Puckett and nephew Vernon Puckett.
Survivors include one son Bobby Butler and his wife Penny of Moody; one daughter JoAnn Norman of Moody and eleven grandchildren and many great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Temple Humane Society.
Visitation will be from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM Friday at the cemetery.
