Sandy was my 1SG at HSC 62d Engr. I was thinking of her the other day and her name came up last night on FB. I did not know she had passed.  She was so young. I'll miss you Top.

The most Outstanding Non Commissioned Officer I served with.  You are missed Sandra.

I served under CSM Beattie from 1997-1999 w/ the 62nd Engineer Battalion Combat (Heavy). I will never forget the day I met her, the time we spent together, nor the day we parted when she attended my Hail/Farewell dinner.  One of the best women and NCOs I've ever known.  God love you and rest in peace. -Always faithful, SPC Bowers.

I was blessed to work for CSM Beattie when I first joined the Army as a Private. She was energetic and funny but she also was tough and taught me to be hard worker as well as a good Soldier. I worked directly for her for 2.5 yrs and everyone in 62nd Eng Battalion would tease that I was her daughter since I too had blonde hair. I remember when she broke her hand and would joke around by putting it in the air and saying "AFLAC" mimicking the AFLAC duck. She was the first one to explain field operations to me and go on ride alongs to see what each company was doing and how they worked together. She was also the first one I saw on 9/11 after I had been listening the news on the radio. When I got to work I told her what had happened. When she turned on the tv the second plane hit the tower and she looked at me and said "This is no mistake, we are going to war" and that was the first time I realized what it meant to wear the uniform. I came to the unit as a PVT, E-1, and she was the one to pin my SGT stripes on me. I think of her often and how much she encouraged me to do better and how being under her care influenced me to be better. I too still have my marble. All my respect and love <3 Christie Van Dyke

CSM Sandra Beattie, we first met in one early morning meeting at the BHQ so you could introduce yourself. You said some words that grab everyone's attention and nearly gag us while we were drinking our coffee. You took command of the NCOs that morning. You became a nightmare for those who did not meet our army's standards and became mentor to others. We became friends. I so wanted to get Clint Eastwood to come to one our Battalion Awards formation but I could never get in touch with him. I will miss you Sandra as my mentor but most of all, my friend. Sandy, you were truly the reason that I loved the Army so much.  You never allowed anyone to step out of line, especially the females, and you made certain that all of us were held to the highest standards.  You were my hero, my idol, my mentor.  I think of you often and have ever since I left Ft. Hood.  I wish I had had a chance to see you again and thank you for my life - none of it would have been possible without you.  You are truly missed and I will never forget you. (I still have your copy of Mr. Murder LOL - thanks for letting me 'borrow' it ;} Great book!)...until we meet again...

I first met Sandra Beattie, 1SG at the time when I was a PFC just joined the Army as an Engineer at Ft Hood, a thing most woman dont do when joining the Army since it was a mans job back in the 90's. She was tough but I never had any issues with her, she even liked me and I looked up to her as a strong capable woman who made a name for herself in a mans world. I was proud of her as a woman and she made me want to be a 1SG one day and taught me that taking care of soldiers was all that matters. I still have that nco mentality today as a federal civilian working with soldiers in garrison. I remember when we were out in the field sleeping in the mud we dug for fighting positions she would come around with worthers caramels. that made our day and she cared you could tell. To any who may read this.  I have been searching for Sandra Beattie for several years.  She and I were junior enlisted when assigned 1/41 FA in Germany.  If this is my friend I'm so very sorry to hear of her passing. Please, someone who can confirm this Sandra Beattie is who I think she is - contact me.

CSM Sanda L. (Sandy) Beattie was a professional soldier with a great sense of humor. She always tried to come across with the "tipical blonde" attitude.  Of her many accomplishments in the army, she attended and successfully graduated from the US Army Sergeants Major Academy at Ft Bliss, TX (I think her class number was 48).  Upon completion of the academy, she was promoted to Sergeant Major (E-9), then was selected to be laterally appointed to Command Sergeant Major and was then assigned as the first female Command Sergeant Major of the 62d Engineer Battalion at Ft Hood, TX.  She served there until her retirement in September 2003.  She was the Point of Contact (POC) for planning and organizing the Land Clearing Association Reunion in the year 2000 at Ft Hood, TX.  Her professional dedication in supporting, organizing, and planning this reunion made her a big success in the eyes of all the Land Clearers attending the reunion.  Her efforts made us veterans that had served as Land Clearers with the 62d Engineer Battalion in the Vietnam Jungles feel that we had finally received our "welcome home".  Sandy will be dearly missed, especially by the members of our "Land Clearing Association".  We have lost many of our Land Clearing brothers over the years.  I like to think tht God needed a "humorous blonde CSM" there to get them all in line again.

UH OH, you know me Sandy. I was crying as I wrote this and put the 200 Reunion instead of the 2000 Reunion. Now I know we arn't that old so forgive my mistake.  Love ya, Sister Haze

Hey Little Sis,  Now why did you up and leave all the Landclearers and me? That just ain't right. I know we had our disagreements but that is what sisters do hun, then we kiss and make up. You were the driving force at the 200 Reunion at Fort Hood that help show our LC'ers they were a very special group and was respected.  ~SANDY~ A wonderful precious sister like you is everything, Because of all the joy and love you gave me. The first time I met Sandy I was w/ my brother, Bill Clapper. Sandy later told Bill that she thought I was his wife so she kept her distance. We had a good laugh over that.

I met Sandi at the FT Hood Reunion  for the 62nd Land Cleares , she was a Top Notch Soldier ,and I'm sure she's already getting troops in line in Heaven. May God Bless her and her Family
