A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Tony Matamoros passed from this earth on February 7, 2026, and was called home to the Lord. With faith and hope in the Resurrection, we commend his soul to God, trusting in His mercy and promise of eternal life.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Maria Matamoros, and one beloved grandson.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Eva Matamoros, the love of his life. Their marriage was a beautiful witness to faith, commitment, and enduring love, and Tony’s happiest moments were spent by Eva’s side. He is also survived by his children: sons Paul Matamoros (Robbie) and Robert Matamoros (Shelley) daughter Misty Baker (Neil). Tony was a proud and loving grandfather to Logan Matamoros (Madison), Macie Hood (Hank), Grace Matamoros, Joshua Matamoros, Jacob Baker, and Lily Baker, and a cherished great-grandfather to Jett Matamoros and Silas Hood.
Tony is also survived by his sisters, Margie Lopez, Aggie Cecil, Mary Lopez, and Lianor Martinez, and his brother, Jesse Matamoros.
Tony’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. A faithful member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, he served the Church and community with humility and dedication. He was an active member of the Brothers’ Ministry and the Bereavement Ministry, offering comfort, presence, and prayer to those in need. One of his most meaningful ministries was serving St. Vincent de Paul, where he joyfully lived out Christ’s call to serve the poor and vulnerable.
Family was Tony’s greatest blessing. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the light of his life. A lifelong sports fan, Tony began coaching his children in sports in the 1970s and later became his grandchildren’s most loyal supporter. Whether driving them to practice or cheering from the stands, he never missed an opportunity to encourage them.
Tony was a faithful Texas Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys fan and a proud supporter of the Rogers Eagles. A lifelong resident of Rogers, Texas, he could still be found cheering on Friday night football from the stands, even during the 2025 season.
Tony graduated from Rogers High School in 1964 and married Eva Quintanilla on May 1, 1965, beginning a marriage that would span six decades and leave a legacy of love and faith.
Visitation will be held on February 10, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m., at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple, Texas.
Funeral Services will be on February 11, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Temple, Texas, with burial immediately following at Rogers Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tony Virseno, Jonny Garcia, Jesse Quintero, Jaime Ybarra, Jonny Angel Hernandez, and Luis Olivas.
Honorary pallbearers are Max Moreno and John Hernandez.
As we mourn Tony’s passing, we do so with hope, knowing that for those who love the Lord, death is not the end.
“The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them.” (Wisdom 3:1)
May Tony rest in the peace of Christ, and may perpetual light shine upon him.
