

Vernon G. Starnes, age 85 of Temple, died Sunday May 6, 2018 at a local care center. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am Friday, May 11, 2018 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with Dr. Tom Robbins officiating. Entombment will follow at Bellwood Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors from 5-7:00pm Thursday, May 10, 2018 at the funeral home. Vernon Gilbert Starnes was born on December 17, 1932 in Temple, TX to the late James Gilbert Starnes and Lou Ella Stracener Starnes. He attended schools in Temple and graduated from Temple High School in 1950. Vernon married Margie Lynn Walker on July 23, 1954 in Friendship United Methodist Church. Mrs. Starnes preceded Vernon in death on April 19, 2004. Vernon worked for the Temple Telegram before working for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after over 30 years of service, lastly as postmaster. He was a member and past president of the Temple Amateur Radio Club “W5WDW”, member of the Confederate Air Force, member of the Tuesday Morning Men’s Prayer Group of First United Methodist Church in Temple as well as a member of the Dawson Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church, Temple. He also served on the Temple Airport Advisory Board. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Iva Starnes. Survivors include his daughter, Kathy Ann Sebesta and husband Charles of Temple; two sons, Billy Starnes of Temple and Jack Starnes and wife Sandra of Dripping Springs; a brother, Curtis Starnes and wife Jo of Temple; and two grandchildren, Mack Starnes and wife Alexandra and Leah Starnes, both of Austin.
