

Edward J. Haas, 97, of Toms River, NJ, formerly of Weehawken, died on May 14, 2013. Pre-deceased by his parents, Mary and Emil Haas, and his brother, Robert Haas, he is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathleen (nee Gilligan), his sister, Grace Torgesen, his children and their spouses, Edward Haas Jr (Charlene), Marian Haas (William Cesanek), Kathleen Ferry (Robert), Robert Haas (Victoria King), Thomas Haas and Bud Schlemmer (Fati), 16 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A graduate of Weehawken High School, he served in the Naval Reserve, Army Air Corps - WWII Alaska Expedition, and as Captain for the Weehawken Police, retiring in 1979 after 29 years. Ed will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and friend to all who knew him. He was active into his 90’s and committed to lifelong learning, with interests in carpentry, music, automobile repair and the Anchor Club. His family continues his traditions of camping at Lake George and vacationing in Florida. A wake will be held on Monday, May 20 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Quinn Hopping, 26 Mule Rd, Toms River. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s RC Church on Tuesday, May 21 at 10am, with burial at NJ Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown, NJ.In lieu of flowers please consider a contribution in his memory to the National Parks Conservation Association.
