

Janis Pearl Kemp Kastel, 73, of Ortley Beach, N.J., passed away on March 18, 2016, after a brief illness. Janis was born in Parkersburg, W.V., on April 23, 1942, to Alfred and Eloise Kemp. A graduate of Parkersburg High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree in art education from Marshall University, Huntington, W.V. She taught elementary and middle school art for more than 30 years in the Brick Township public school system. She had a love of the ocean, enjoyed skiing in the Catskills and ran a timeshare ski club with friends and family in Pine Hill, N.Y. Other hobbies included working in her prized garden, reading, competing in trivia games and watching British TV shows. After retirement, she gave private art lessons in her home, painted murals in homes and several local businesses, and spent time with her beloved grandchildren and calico cats. She was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 399, Ortley Beach, and participated in the lodge’s dart league. She is predeceased by her husband of 47 years, John “Jack” Kastel, and is survived by son John W. Kastel, of Bayville, N.J.; daughter Jodi and husband Keith McCaffrey, Washington, N.J., granddaughters Alexis and Kayla Kastel and grandson Christopher McCaffrey. A Memorial Celebration will be held Saturday, April 2, 2016, at 2 p.m. at the Ortley Beach Moose Lodge 399, 1801 Bay Boulevard, Ortley Beach, N.J.
