Lawrence “Larry” Byrnes, 86, of Toms River, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born on April 12, 1939, in Paterson, New Jersey to Leslie and Agatha Byrnes. Larry lived a full and generous life marked by service, dedication to family, and a warm spirit that touched everyone he met.
Larry proudly served in the National Guard from 1960 through 1968 and was a longtime volunteer firefighter with Company #1 in West Paterson. His commitment to helping others extended beyond his official roles—he was always ready to lend a hand to family, friends, and neighbors alike. Professionally, Larry worked as a manager for Hewitt Manufacturing in Passaic, where he brought diligence and leadership to his role. For 18 years, Larry made his home on Forest Ridge, where he formed many lifelong friendships and shared memorable vacations with those close to him. He had a natural gift for connecting with people—wherever he went, everyone knew Larry. Known for his ever-present smile and quick wit, he brought joy and laughter into every room.
Larry had a deep love for politics and was an enthusiastic supporter at his grandchildren’s baseball and softball games. He found great satisfaction working outdoors and around the house—there was nothing he couldn’t fix. His hands were always busy building or repairing something useful for those he cared about. Above all else, Larry cherished his family. He shared 66 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife Grace Irma Byrnes of Toms River. Together they built a strong foundation of love and support that continues through their children: son Steven Byrnes of Little Egg Harbor; daughter Lisa LeBar and son-in-law Dennis LeBar of Toms River; and their late son Kevin Byrnes of Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania, who passed away in January 2025.
Larry was the proud grandfather of Nicholas LeBar, Cody LeBar, and Gianna LeBar—all of Toms River—and the great-grandfather to Aria Sofia who he adored. His devotion to them was unwavering; he never missed an opportunity to cheer them on or share in their accomplishments. He is also survived by his brother Leslie Byrnes of Clifton; sisters Veronica “Ronnie” Corby of Totowa and Kathleen Snell of Florida; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will miss him deeply. He was predeceased by his siblings Mary Witty, Joseph Byrnes, Edward Byrnes, and Frank Byrnes. He was also predeceased by his sister in Law Eleanor Pullara and brother in law Samuel Pullara. Larry’s legacy is one of kindness, humor, hard work, and unwavering love for those around him. He leaves behind countless memories that will be treasured forever by all who had the privilege to know him. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and may his spirit continue to inspire acts of generosity and joy.
