Mr. Mitchell was my Grade 11 Physics teacher, and my favorite teacher in high school. I still remember his clever sayings, especially, "If a hen and a half lays an egg and a half in a day and a half, how many flapjacks does it take to shingle a doghouse?" And his recommended response to the question: "Are you chewing gum?" was "Gulp-no sir."

One of the best teachers ever.  Welcoming lines never to be forgotten:  "OK Kiddies, today we're going to learn about ..."; "So you know, today is Fuseday ... short fuse day."  An andragogue among pedagogues.  He will not be forgotten by his students.

So sorry to learn that Bert is no longer with us. He was such a talented and compassionate man, so gifted at crafts and toy making. The OMLTA always appreciated when he attended annual meetings to be present for the Helen G Mitchell awards.

Bert will live on as Geppetto and every Christmas will bring challenge and delight in his Nativity puzzle.  Thank you, Bert.

Dad will always be in my heart, as he always has been.  I miss him.

I was always interested in Bert whatever Bert was making and am in process of fixing my lovely wind chime he gave me. He always had so many interesting things to say and work on.  Was sorry to hear from Pat he had died.

Aura, you, and your family are in my thoughts at this time

Due to Bert's added interest helping blind children to live a fuller life he magically made equipment which broadened their ability to fit in the world around them. We remember with pride his devotion to his family, teaching career and his WWII service. We are disappointed we are not able to attend the service but due to illness, are unable.

My mom, Elly Pearson, was one of Bert's breakfast tablemates at Del Manor. I am posting a message on her behalf... 

Please know that she enjoyed Bert's company and his stories very much... she was very saddened to hear of his passing and the breakfast table will never be quite the same now. I will miss the little Geppetto that hung from his walker and adorned his license plate - he was surprised and delighted several years ago when I gave him a birthday card with his beloved character on it!

We are so happy to have had the opportunity to spend some time with Bert since our arrival in The Cove. He was such a warm and interesting man who loved to share his wealth of knowledge, while always showing an interest in others and the stories they had to tell. May the many years of wonderful memories you have shared help you through this difficult time.

I am a volunteer with St. John's Ambulance Therapy Dogs and in that capacity have known Bert for almost three years.  He was, by far, the person who most enjoyed the visits that myself and my dog  "Louie" made to Del Manor in Richmond Hill. I enjoyed his intelligence, wit, compassion for others, generous spirit and gratitude. Bert was a gentleman with a love for life and people and overall the type of person who just makes the world a better place, whether it be by making toys for blind children or by ensuring that nobody at Del Manor was ever truly alone. I will miss him dearly. I am happy to have had the opportunity to know him for the short period that I did.  

My condolences to his entire family - you have certainly lost a real prince of a man.
