Born and raised in Toronto, Beverly met John, her husband of 66 years, and together they built a warm and close-knit family that she guided with love, strength, and humour as the matriarch of our family.
She began her career at Mercantile & General Reinsurance Company of Canada, where she met the love of her life, John Gray. After staying home to raise their three children, she returned to the workforce with roles at the Ontario Egg Producers’ Marketing Board and Kelly Advertising before founding her own business, Freelancers Unlimited — which continues to thrive today under the leadership of her son, James.
Beverly filled her days with art, crosswords, puzzles, and a competitive hand of bridge — always with a cup of tea and the daily newspaper nearby. She was feisty, curious, and devoted to staying connected with family. She cherished every moment with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was always ready with advice, a story, or a listening ear.
She will be dearly missed by her beloved husband John; children Susan Van Velzen (Mark Wilson), James Gray (Rocio Gray), and Joanne Gray; grandchildren Cassie Van Velzen (Terry Volanis), Lindsay Turner (Shane Turner), Sammy Van Velzen, and Stephen Gray; great-grandchildren Joshua and Calliope Volanis and Faron Turner; and step-great-grandchildren Gus Turner and Emanuel Volanis. Beverly is also survived by her siblings Doug Goodeve (Karin) and Lois Goodeve (Albert) and predeceased by her loving sister Dianne Goodeve and her parents Dorothy and William Goodeve.
Her loyal Old English Sheepdog Chester (Winchester) was her constant companion for many years and the pair were well-known and well-loved on their neighbourhood strolls.
A visitation will be held Saturday, December 6, from 12–4pm at Kane & Jarrett Funeral Home on Yonge Street in North York. All are welcome to join in celebrating her life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westpark Foundation, whose respiratory clinic supported her with exceptional care.
