It is with profound sadness that the family of Emmanuel Franklin Burt share that after a short journey with cancer, Manny peacefully was Promoted to Glory on Monday, 27 February 2023 with Andrew by his side. Manny will be remembered as a mild-mannered gentleman who was devoted to his family, work, friends and his faith.
Born in Humbermouth (now Corner Brook), Manny grew up in Newfoundland. He began work with Scotiabank at the age of 17 and was transferred to Ontario in 1964 where he continued to work with the bank until retirement in 1998. Brenda joined him in 1966, were married in 1968 where Toronto became home. They welcomed Chantel (1972) and Andrew (1973) and built a life together in Willowdale.
Manny loved people and went out of his way to make you feel comfortable. It was always important to him to know your name. He loved the Toronto Maple Leafs and was overjoyed when Toronto got a Major League baseball team (but that did not take away his love for the Brooklyn Dodgers). He loved old movies, rich vanilla ice cream, vacations and cruising. He enjoyed investing time with his grandchildren and never tired from their curiosity.
He was a life-long member of The Salvation Army and North York Temple was his home church for the past fifty-one years. He was instrumental in the pioneering days of The Salvation Army’s Junior Hockey League where his love of sport and mentoring young people came together in ministry. He later coached and refereed hockey. Manny’s faith in Jesus was quiet and simple, often expressed behind the scenes.
He is survived by Brenda, his wife of 54 years, his children Chantel (Stephen), Andrew (Tracy) and his grandchildren Drew, Max, Eli and Cathy who called him Gramps. He is also survived by his sister Violet (Roy) and is pre-deceased by his parents Elias and Olive Burt and his siblings Frank, Barbara (Ches), Neta and Shirley.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to Dr Ahangari (family doctor), Dr Myers (oncology) and Dr Arya (palliative) for their compassionate care.
Visitation will be held Kane-Jerrett Funeral Home North York, 6191 Yonge Street on Friday, 17 March 2023 from 4-8 pm. Funeral services will take place at The Salvation Army North York Temple, 25 Centre Avenue on Saturday, 18 March 2023 at 1 pm.
