Pui-Ying (Chan) Fan, 95, of Toronto, passed away peacefully on Jan 28, 2025 surrounded by loved ones, after a valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Pui-Ying (培英) was born on Nov 24, 1929 to Tam-Mui (談妹) and Cam Chan (陳錦) in Hong Kong. She was married to her beloved husband Yan-Kwong Fan (范恩光) in 1952. They went on to have four children: Kelvin (計寧), Michelle (婉雯), Curtis (詞鋒) and Daniel (詳麟).
After her husband’s retirement, the couple immigrated to Canada with their youngest son in 1982 to join their daughter who was already in Toronto. The rest of the family also moved to Toronto in subsequent years.
When she was younger, she loved origami. She could make birds and many other foldings from memory! Being a housewife all her life, Pui-Ying’s greatest achievement was the raising of her four children. During her time in Toronto, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends like going on some “once-in-a-lifetime” cruises. She loved knitting, gardening, watching TV series, learning English, and best of all, shopping!
She was very proud to continue to cook for her family even at age 90. However, Parkinson’s started creeping up on her during the Covid pandemic. Her movement and speech were restricted in her late years. She found joy in attending “Dancing with Parkinson’s” group. She always entered the classroom with a big smile where she could feel love surrounding her! While she was very determined to increase her mobility through physiotherapy, her new found game was mahjong which she took pride in standing up the tiles and moving them!
Pui-Ying was predeceased by her parents Tam-Mui and Cam; her stepmothers Lan (蘭) and Gwun-Wan (觀環); her husband Yan-Kwong; her brothers Pui-Kwong (培光) and Chuan-Kwong (銓光); her sisters-in-law Cheuk-Hing (焯卿) and Yuk-Jan (玉珍); her brothers-in-law Ka-Wing (家榮) and Chi-Ming (志明); and her son-in-law Nelson (李立信).
Pui-Ying is survived by her children Kelvin, Michelle with partner Victor, Curtis, and Daniel with wife Pauline (潔芳); her grandsons Aaron (偉德) with wife Susana (紫盈), and Michael (思明) with partner Houtina (皓婷); her brother Wing-Kwong (永光); her sisters Selina (雪英), Rita (潔英), and Ada (美英); her sisters-in-law Candy (玉環) and Sau-Ha (秀霞); her nephews Conrad (國威) with wife Dora (穎音), Kin-Fai (健暉), Chung-Leung (仲良), and Tommy (享亨); her nieces Wendy (慧婷) with husband Quincy (錦耀), Ka-Yee (嘉儀), and So-Wah (素華) with husband Heng (恆); and her grandnephews Angus (毅), Bosco (瀚), Ethan (錫熙), Florian (宏𤋮), Man-Jit (旻哲), and Ai-Hak (艾克).
“Mom, you are now in a far better place with Dad. Goodbye Mom, we love you!”
