Christ is Risen, Truly Risen

It is with heavy hearts but with the hope of Eternal Resurrection that the Alfar family announces the passing of our amazing Mother and Grandmother Sonia wife of the late Kamal Hanna Alfar, Exceptional Mother to Katia, Micheline (Hassib), Khalil (Angela) and Maya (Richard). Loving Grandmother to Pamela (Bill), Paulina (Matias), Chris, Eric, Ty, Skyler and Dylan.

Sonia was born in Machghara, Lebanon where she met and married the love of her life Kamal. They moved across Lebanon due to his work and then settled in Beirut where she raised her children during a long civil war. A natural host, she always loved welcoming family and friends. Her house became the unofficial stop for visitors from her town where she always welcomed them with her delicious Lebanese dishes and everlasting smile.

In 1986, they immigrated to Canada to find peace and better opportunities for the family. Despite leaving her relatives and friends behind, Sonia focused on her children and later grandchildren.

In 1997, she moved to Aurora, Ontario and volunteered at the Aurora Seniors Centre for many years, earning awards for her contributions.

Mom/Grandma Sony “As affectionately referred to by her Grandkids” was a very strong resilient woman who enjoyed traveling the world while giving unconditional love to her family. Traditional family values and spirituality were paramount for her and yet she was a spontaneous person who enjoyed having fun.

She passed away peacefully on Tuesday Sept 5th surrounded by her loving family. The courage strength and resilience she displayed will guide us for many years to come.

Dearest Mom and Grandma we adore you and you will be in our hearts ♥️ forever.

A visitation for Sonia will be held Monday, September 11, 2023 from 12:00 AM to 1:00 PM at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 9116 Bayview Avenue, Richmond Hill, ON L4B3M9. A Funeral Service will occur Monday, September 11, 2023, 1pm , at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 9116 Bayview Avenue, Richmond Hill, ON L4B3M9. A private committal service will occur Monday, September 11, 2023 from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM at Elgin Mills Cemetery, 1591 Elgin Mills Road, Richmond Hill, ON L4S1M9.
