Jaggun Uhmma, I am going to miss your smile. Thank you, for always welcoming me into your home and the store when I got homesick during my university days. You made the best kimchi jigae. I really enjoyed our conversations and I will miss your laugh. You always worked so hard with such a pleasant and generous heart.  I look forward to our meeting again in heaven. 

Mom is courageous. She and dad left Korea to create a life in free, unoppressed Canada in 1976. She and dad raised three girls, worked 30+ years, built a home and ran a business to fully participate in the Canadian way of life. She is a golfer, hiker, artist, chef. I remember her singing while cooking and out running all three of her daughters when it rained to go get the car to pick us up. Before she became wife, mom, aunt, and halmoni, she designed fashion, raised her two brothers and two sisters, going to parent teacher meetings when her mom couldn’t. She helped look after her parents pharmacy and greeted the customers. I always think of mom as a lady with energy and compassion. You could not underestimate her. Her understanding of English was far greater than the command of the language I thought she had. She would surprise us with elaborate English words and my sisters and I would look stunned at each other. My mom would say, “what, you didn’t think I know?” Her work ethic is incredible to me because she would cook, clean, wake up at 5am to work till evening, and still make breakfast sandwiches for me before swim team practice. My mom knocked on my door when I was studying and placed cut fruit on my desk. She gave me my first ledger to keep track of my financials. She is responsible. With a tight budget, she saved money to buy a bungalow with a ravine backyard. My mom didn’t want me to be lonely when my sisters left for university, so she allowed me to have a puppy we named Maximillion Thanksamillion. My mom is still alive, transitioned to the spiritual world. The dues she paid in life and her faith in God has brought her to heaven. She is with Haneul, her father, her older sister, and those who lived diligently, honestly, and compassionately. Mom, I love you, now and forever. I’ll see you again.
