Hi Judy. 
I’ll always remember Doug coming to chat with me just before the Church Service. He always wore his Cross tie pin, and carried his notebook to write things down about the Sermon. 
Doug was such a gentle man. 
I hope that you are both thinking about the wonderful memories you have of you and Doug being together, and also looking forward to the new life you are building for yourself.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about Doug's death and I am sending my deepest condolences and my prayers to all of you. May God's comfort and presence be with you in the coming days.

I have known Doug through the Toronto Community Orchestra for the past 15 or so years. He always came across as the kindest, most considerate and loving person and it was always a pleasure to see him. I also remember his deft and gentle and tactful manner the few times he conducted us and led the rehearsals. The whole orchestra will miss him.

Dear Judy,

I remember my first encounter with Doug. It was the first night we had an Alpha meeting. “Ni hao,” he said, with a slight tilt of his head and a soft-spoken voice. We engaged in a friendly banter, where he told me how many languages he could speak, and I would playfully match his few words with mine. We had brief conversations after that – all preceded by his “Ni hao” followed by a hug that felt like grandma’s warm apple pie and an ice cream sundae all rolled into one. 

But the most meaningful and memorable exchange was in church when he came over to us and gently coaxed our eyes to the stained-glass window on the side wall where Jesus was on the other side of the knobless door, waiting for us to open it. “This is what we talked about the other night,” he half whispered, leaning closer. “Jesus is on the other side, waiting.” I don’t recall the rest of the conversation, but I remember how he made us feel with his non-judgemental warmth and unconditional love. One of us opened that proverbial door to Christ the following week, and the other recommitted Him to her heart.

If I were to imagine Doug meeting God, I have no doubt he would be prepared for a friendly banter with Him in whatever language! “Ni hao, Doug.” You are deeply missed!

I was deeply saddened to learn about Doug's sudden passing, and the shock of this news is still settling in. We played together at TCO in the violin section for a number of years. One particular memory stands out – the shared laughter we had while discussing Hilary Hahn's skillful hula hooping rendition of Paganini's 24th caprice.

Im so sorry to hear of Dougs death. Ill always remember his smile and his positive outlook on life. It was so sureal, any time I was anxious or angry, or just not doing well Id see him at Dismas and all that would just melt away. When he played his violin, I'd listen in awe at how he mad such beautiful music on an instrument older then  both of us combined. The world is a little less now, but heaven is truly blessed. I love Doug and Judy. My heart is broken for them.

It was with shock, grief and many tears that I read about Doug’s passing. I’ve known him for approximately 15 years,  playing often side by side. In the orchestra. We had many conversations about music,  how to take care of our BMW’s, and his health issues.

Dear Judy
As you can tell by the  messages on this site, Doug meant a lot of different things to a lot of different people. But the common denominator was that he was always kind to everyone.
My first connection to Doug was having him tell me all about the tie he had chosen for that Sunday service. All unique... just like him. 
He was someone  truly interested in others and ready to share opinions on a wide range of topics. What a brain. What a man.
We now have another intercessor in heaven to help Jesus in that role.

Dear Judy, 

I got to know Doug when he first started volunteering his time and musical expertise by joining our band for specific performances.    Always interesting and so willing to share his love of music, he was always welcomed by NHBT members and became our "go to person" when his talents were needed.        After a performance a few years ago, I commented on how great it is that a string player could step in the percussion role  without little preparation and I called him our first inhouse "Ringer"...to which he jokingly replied," I don’t play the rings!".

He will be in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him, as will you be in our thoughts as he is remembered.

My mom and I were so shocked to learn of Doug's passing as he and Judy had stopped by a couple weeks ago as part of the prayer team with beautiful gifts which were greatly appreciated.  Doug seemed in good spirits and healthy.   We would like to convey our deepest sympathies to Judy and family.

Dad and I will remember Doug's warm and gracious welcome on Sunday mornings. He truly was a living example of Christ's love. I also remember so fondly the Compass Group Bible study that you and Doug hosted at your home that I was honoured to be a part of. He shared many happy memories and stories about railways and his dad's years with them.   But also we chatted about so many other things.  I will truly miss him. I did not know Doug for very long or very well. I met Doug and Judy as a fellow Prayer Warrior, but the three or four times I spoke to Doug in person, usually in the hallway at St. John's, Doug struck me as a very gentle and kind soul with a totally selfless spirit. It was an honour to know him.

I have so many wonderful memories of Doug. I remember especially what he brought to our Bible study in terms of insight, leadership, and not forgetting his marvellous accompaniment on the violin of our valiant attempts to sing carols. His enthusiasm for the role of greeter,  his hosting at your home, his always positive presence in our midst are some of the other memories I will cherish.

You will be in my thoughts on January 11, Judy, as you remember Doug's life. Warm hugs.

Please accept my sympathy and extended condolences for Doug and family during this time of personal loss and grief.  My greatest memory and recollection for Doug was at Christmas 1959 when I travelled with my sister Sandra and parents (Russell and Margaret Kite) from St. Catharines to Toronto to visit my Uncle Stew, Aunt Olwyn and cousins Doug, Rick and Bob for the first time. My father and aunt were related as brother and sister.  I was 14 and Doug 17.  During the visit, I was able to spend the majority of time with Doug.  As it was, we were able to bond as cousins as he familiarized me with Scarborough and the area in which he lived.  I am not sure exactly where it was that we were or whether I would be able to locate the area again.  I am sure that it was somewhere around the Don Valley.  I recall this as a memorable and unforgettable experience.   Now 78, I  can only wish I could relive this time again.
