Tom lived a life that truly made the most of his “dash.” After a lifetime of dedicated and selfless servanthood, Tom faced the challenges of aging with grace, and died peacefully enveloped in the love of his extended family.
Tom was devoted husband and life partner to Audrey Adams for over 60 years until her untimely death in 2018 from cancer; generous and supportive Dad to son Michael and Judy Nettleton of Toronto, daughter Dawn and Donald Glennie of Niagara Falls, and daughter Jennifer Nettleton of Hamilton, as well as their special “sister” Kathrin Brock of Erding; proud Grandpa Tom to Carolyn (Krystal), Malcolm, Lindsay, Gregory (Maddy), Matthew, Brian (Elizabeth), Theresa and Erin in all their endeavours; and devoted Uncle Tom to Julie Sandwell, Trish Blackburn, Carol Swanson and Sonia Moore. In addition to his beloved Audrey, he was predeceased by his loving parents Hazel Harriett Fraser Gauld and Cecil Arthur Nettleton, his brother John William Nettleton and wife Violet Shannon, infant granddaughter Robyn Alexandra Nettleton, and lifelong friends Roy Swanson and his wife Kathy Horner.
He brought spirit, excellence and meticulous attention to every responsibility he shouldered. After obtaining his undergraduate degree in aeronautical engineering, Tom pursued masters-level studies as an Athlone Fellow studying at the College of Aeronautics at Cranfield, Bedfordshire. In career he was an aerodynamicist with international reputation at De Havilland Canada contributing to design and development of aircraft from the Twin Otter to the Dash 8-400. He also served his community as long-time Treasurer of the Presbytery of East Toronto, and elder at Armour Heights Presbyterian Church with long and distinguished service on multiple committees and teams. In his later retirement, rather than rest, among various initiatives he brought joy to his fellow residents at Canterbury Place Retirement Home with his popular and innovative Friday evening bingo program.
Tom was friend, advisor and companion to many — friends, family and furry friends alike — and his hearty laugh, gregarious generosity, and insightful wisdom will be greatly missed.
Friends will be received at Kane-Jerrett Funeral Home, 6191 Yonge St, Sunday, November 9, 2025 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM. Funeral to take place at Armour Heights Presbyterian Church at 105 Wilson Avenue, Toronto on Monday, November 10, 2025 at 11:00 AM, with reception to follow in the church hall. Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery following the reception.
We thank all of Tom’s caregivers at Canterbury Place Retirement Residence. We hold special gratitude for Dr Margaret Bennett for her insightful and patient-focused care for Tom and Audrey over many years, and for Tom’s community wound care nurse Mavis who brought joyful healing to every visit and dressing change.
