Stephen Lee Ward was born on December 7, 1949, in Tyler, Texas and passed away May 17, 2025. He was among the first babies born at Mother Frances Hospital, marking the beginning of a life deeply rooted in East Texas soil.
Raised to value hard work, farming, and respect for the land, he spent his career with the Texas A&M Experiment Station in Overton, where he made lasting contributions to agriculture and land stewardship. He was brilliant when it came to the natural world—he could read the sky like a weather map, identify just about any plant, and later became an expert jet skier.
A man of strong will and boundless energy, Steve was always seeking adventure. After retirement, he found pure joy on the water, becoming a devoted jet skier who loved the thrill of the ride and the freedom of the open lake. He had a knack for inspiring others, often dragging his loving wife, Sharla, along on his spontaneous journeys and turning everyday life into a grand adventure.
Steve was also a man of deep faith. He loved God with all his heart and lived out his beliefs through kindness and a generous spirit. He was known for his strength of will, endless curiosity, and his generosity. He gave his time, his knowledge, and his energy to everyone he met.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Lola Belle and H.R. Ward. He is survived by his wife, Sharla Ward, and his daughter, Stephanie, who will forever cherish his laughter, guidance, and the memories of a life lived boldly.
A service to celebrate his life will be held Tuesday, May 27 at 6:00 p.m. at Lloyd James Funeral Home in Tyler, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Future Farmers of America Foundation at FFA.org/donate or Hiway 80 Rescue Mission at https://hiway80rm.givevirtuous.org/donate/general-webform-page, both causes close to his heart.
