Alma Prashina Segedin was born in Kostrena, Croatia, on April 8th, 1922 and emigrated to the United States via Ellis Island in October of that same year. She settled with her family in Kenosha, Wisconsin where she worked in her father's bakery as a young adult before the family moved to East, Chicago Indiana.
During World War II, Alma worked in the steel industry and wrote to a number of American servicemen, as was the practice back then. One such serviceman was a soldier who served together with Alma’s brother, Rudy, in the US Army, Frank Segedin. After the war ended and after 4 years of writing to each other, Alma finally met Frank in person when she and Rudy visited another brother, Ted, and his wife, Betty, in Long Island City. The two got engaged during that meeting and were married on September 21, 1946 and moved to Union City, spent several years in Weehawken, and moved back to Union City until 1968, where they raised their two children, Maxine and Nicky. During those years, Alma was very active in the Robert Waters School PTA and served as its president for many years.
In March 1968, Alma, Frank, and their children moved to the Gregory Avenue house in Weehawken where Alma had her interior decorating business and Frank gave private music lessons. Alma became very involved in Weehawken activities and especially with the Weehawken Seniors where she served as president until the pandemic. Alma also worked for the Board of Elections up until that time, as well. She was awarded Weehawken Senior of the Year in 2002. In addition, she was a talented seamstress and baker. The house was always full of family and friends, many of whom visited from other parts of the country and from Croatia, and she cooked amazing meals for all. Alma was also a very serious Scrabble player, who usually won every game, and who also enjoyed crossword puzzles…..that she completed in ink! Her favorite color was purple and so it was not uncommon for her to get gifts in that color or to use it in her house décor.
Alma and Frank have a son-in-law, Miljenko, a daughter-in-law, Janet, five grandchildren, Michael, Andrew, Mark, Julia, and Audrey, as well as a host of nieces & nephews all of whom will miss both of them very much but know that the two of them are together once again. For those wishing, donations may be made in Alma’s memory to the Weehawken Volunteer First Aid Squad, 201 Highwood Avenue, Weehawken, NJ 07086, or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105.
A visitation for Alma will be held Tuesday, April 4, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Leber Funeral Home, 2000 Kennedy Blvd, Union City, NJ 07087. The funeral mass will be on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St Lawrence Church, 88 Hackensack Ave, Weehawken, NJ 07086.
