Born in Saint Marc, Haiti, to the late Dorcina Darius and the late Louis Viau, Fred lived in Coney Island, NY until moving to Union City more than 53 years ago. Fred studied to be a mechanic and worked at this profession for more than 30 years before retiring to spend more time with his wife, Edwine.
Fred was kind and generous with his time and talents to everyone he considered his friend or family. He was a good neighbor and lent a helping hand whenever anyone needed one. He loved fishing and taking long walks outdoors. He was also an avid amateur radio enthusiast and spent his time tinkering with electronics and talking to his family on the radio. He could fix nearly anything that was broken. Most of all, he enjoyed listening to all types of classical music including his favorite, baroque.
Fred is survived by his siblings: Roland, Edouard, Evelyne, Marie Lourdes and her husband Claude Gesse, and Violette; his children: Marie Lourdes, Frances and her husband Adam Pliss, Charlie, Florence and her husband James Herrington, and Mireille and her husband Michael Verna; and grandchildren: Xena, Anne Elizabeth and Didi. In addition to his mother and father, Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Edwine Viau, his sister, Marie Therese St. Come and his daughter, Helen Viau. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friends that he considered family.
A memorial service for Fred will be held Saturday, January 27, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Leber Funeral Home, 2000 Kennedy Blvd, Union City, NJ 07087.
